Armed to the teeth, a ferocious bunch of pirates is descending the river, directly threatening your harbors. How will your Merchant Dwarves fare against the sea rats? Maybe you should have left before, as the Elves did… they told you that they had foreseen great trouble in the Temple of the Seer, but as usual, you didn’t listen. After the pirates, who knows what could happen?
With River World, players will discover new maps full of water regions haunted by merciless pirates. Players will need to defend their precious harbors against them, fight them on the river, and still keep an eye on their opponents! Some regions such as the shipyard or the temple of the seer may help them to have the upper hand, but in River World, there is still not enough room for everybody. And random events that trigger on each turn add to the chaos!
Designed by Philippe Keyaerts, Small World: River World is an expansion for 2 to 5 players ages 8 and older, which takes approximately 40-80 minutes to play.
It includes 2 double-sided maps (4 River World maps), 12 pirate ships markers, 1 caravel marker, 11 event markers and 1 rule booklet.
Small World: River World is expected to be available at Essen Game Fair in Germany in October, shortly after in Europe and in November in the US at retail price of $24.99/€25.
For more information and to download the rules, you can visit the River World web page.
Is this expension also for Smallworld:Underground
While you could make this work with Underground I don’t think it works as well. You’d have to remove/house-rule most of the races/abilities since the terrain types don’t exist in the overworld. That would either be confusing or not as fun.
After skimming over the rules, I think I prefer the places/relics in Underground more than the events and new location items. There’s more variety in what they could be and they’re random for each game which keeps it feeling fresh for each play.
This expansion is designed for Small World, not Small World Underground.
However, if you have both games and wish to use races and powers from below, you can still follow the rules in the “Compatibility with Small World” paragraph in the Small World Underground rules booklet…
I love this franchise. I can’t wait to play this – wish I was going to Essen, this would likely be my first stop!
Very cool! Can’t wait. I like the difference on the expansion being maps instead of races. It’s a different twist on things! (Not that I would be opposed to another race upgrade either…)
I really love this franchise. Our office combines all the expansions with Underground, with a few house rules, and plays a mega game. It works great in the office.
Have you guys considered releasing a differently packaged version of the game from the extraordinarily priced Designer Edition, so that players can house all Small World pieces, expansions, maps, and booklets in one place? Small World has a lot of fans who would love this!
